Bellfoundries
We design,
install, and service cast bronze
bell instruments
for our
clients. We
work with our clients to understand their
needs and desires in a bell instrument,
then create solutions that work within the
constraints, if any, of structure, space,
and
budget.
Our design work
incorporates planning for the possibility of
future musical expansion of the instrument when
possible, and additionally, for consideration
of manual action in addition to electric action.
We
find more
often than not that the consideration of a
single bronze bell, peal, chime or cast bronze
bell carillon is a first time experience for
our clients.
We
are pleased to offer our expertise in
evaluating the possibilities that are
afforded by the site, and further, in
bringing creative ideas forward for
evaluation.
One of our
fortes is in helping to create an initial bell
instrument, whether a single bronze bell, or a
peal, with the goal in mind of making possible
the future successful completion of an expanded
instrument.
We take pleasure
in working with all of our clients to
realize bell instruments, from concept to
completion, that meet their needs and
desires.
We practice our
work with a heart toward musical and
aesthetic craftsmanship, and with a
desire to work with our clients in
creating a high quality instrument of
lasting
value.

Tuned Cast Bronze
Bells From The Paccard Fonderie
des Cloches, Annecy, France
Christoph
Paccard represents the Paccard Fonderie
des Cloches, makers of the world's finest
cast bronze bells since
1796.
The
Paccard family is in its seventh
generation, with world-wide operations
directed by Philippe Paccard. Philippe is
supported in his work by his brother
Cyril who leads the design and
engineering work of the
foundry.
With
over 125,000 bells cast and delivered,
Paccard bells are known worldwide for
their warmth and sweetness of tone, and
for the exceptional quality of their
tuning.
Each
Paccard bell is meticulously crafted by hand,
carefully cast using the lost wax process, and
finely tuned to exacting musical
standards.
Cast
only of bronze, Paccard bells are composed of
pure red copper and block tin. Although the
ratio of copper to tin is different depending
on the size of the bell, most bells are
approximately 78% copper and 22%
tin.
Only new metal is
used in the casting. When selecting a cast
bronze bell, it is also critically
important to choose a founder who
understands how to properly tune a bell.
Paccard is the best choice.
A bell is
unlike many other instruments because it
actually produces multiple notes, called
partials.
Tuning a bell is a
time consuming process that requires the
bellfounder to be proficient with both a
simple tuning fork and high-end digital
tuning equipment.
Using a lathe,
metal is shaved from inside the bell at
various points until the proper tuning is
achieved. The bellfounder must tune the
five lowest partials, at minimum, to the
standard of A3=440 vibrations per
second.
The
Benchmark...
Paccard
bells truly are the benchmark by which
others are
judged.
The
Paccards welcome over 25,000 visitors
annually to their foundry and historic
bell museum in beautiful Annecy, France –
you too are invited to
visit!
